Castle Wolfenstein was mildly entertaining, but the graphics sucked. Then Doom came out, and it was better, but I wasn't a big fan of killing aliens with big weapons. Hexen arrived, and I was finally hooked. The graphics were good (for the time), the action was fun, the puzzles were challenging at times, but it was winnable with effort. I think I have won the game 3 or 4 times over the years just for the fun of it. "Get a life", right? I know. :-)
